EXIT, also known as “the State of EXIT”, is the annual summer music festival taking place in Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia. The festival usually lasts 4 days, it gathers more than 150 thousand people and is one of the three best music festivals in Europe.
The highest class of the event is confirmed not only by the spectators who come to listen to their favorite artists year after year in large numbers but also the experts:
In 2007, the EXIT festival received the UK Festival Awards as the best festival in Europe.
In 2013, the EXIT at the European Festival Awards was recognized as the best big festival in Europe.
In 2016 EXIT festival according to the tourist organization Best European Destinations is included in the list of the best music festivals in Europe.
The idea to create the festival came to the mind of three friends-students of the University of Novi Sad – Dusan Kovačević, the chairman of the student union, Boyana Boskovic and Ivan Milivoyev. In 2000 and 2001 festival was organized with the support of the Institute of Technical Sciences and the University of Novi Sad.
The first EXIT took place on the stages between the University of Novi Sad and the Danube and had a pronounced political character. The slogan of the festival was “EXIT out of ten years of madness”, which literally meant “getting out of the ten-year madness” (referring to the ten-year rule of Slobodan Milosevic). Initially, few believed in the success of the festival, but by the time “EXIT” the festival has turned into a crowd of thousands who unite lovers of absolutely different directions in music.
The following year, the organizers managed to negotiate with the city administration, and EXIT moved to the other side of the Danube in the medieval fortress of the XVII century – Petrovaradin Fortress, which is situated in the town of Novi Sad. In the 2001 festival was held from 6 to 14 July and was a kind of celebration about the displacement of Milosevic and the withdrawal of Serbia from many years of international isolation.
Since then, EXIT traditionally takes place in the Petrovaradin fortress one of the most spectacular festival venues. From the height of the fortress, there is a picturesque view of the city and the Danube flowing below. The stages are quaintly connected by streets and tunnels of the fortress, which creates the atmosphere of an ancient musical city and when it gets dark and the illumination lights up on the bridge across the river, the spectacle becomes absolutely dizzying.
In addition to the unusual venue, the EXIT festival has a number of other features. The duration of the festival is four days and it takes place only at night (beginning at 7 pm, completion is around 6 am). Each musical day ends with a tremendous sunrise. Since 20-30 stages are broken in a limited space of the fortress, some of them are quite small. Competent use of architectural features of the defensive bastion, allows the organizers to give a good sound on each. Youth discussion clubs are opened, presentations are given, theater performances are played.
Music for everyone’s taste
Despite the fact that the main musical direction of the festival organizers considers alternative music, fans of club music will not be disappointed either. To satisfy even the most demanding taste, the EXIT festival has more than 30 stages and festival zones. You can hear famous rock and metal stars, hardcore, punk, hip-hop and reggae stars, various electronic music DJs – from drum&bass and breakbeat to trance and techno. Each year, the festival attracts several hundred thousand people with a variety of musical tastes that know that at the EXIT Festival will hear the hits of their favorite performers.
In different years, the festival was performed by Sex Pistols, Motorhead, Faithless, Cardigans, The Prodigy, Pet Shop Boys, Franz Ferdinand, Wiz Khalifa, Scissor Sisters, The Chemical Brothers, Cypress Hill, Eric Prydz, Jazzanova, Fatboy Slim, Wu -Tang Clan, David Guetta, Maceo Plex and many others.
