Zagreb is the capital and by the number of inhabitants the largest city of the Republic of Croatian. Grew out of two medieval settlements on neighboring hills, Gradec and Kaptol. Continuous history of city can be traced back to 1094 when the Hungarian King Ladislaus I founded the Zagreb diocese on Kaptol. Zagreb is first mentioned as the Croatian capitol in 1557.
The city has had a turbulent history, several fires, earthquakes and wars, but managed to survive and become the largest city in Croatia with 792.000 inhabitants.
The city is full of restaurants and deli, has for every taste and pocket. In the entire city as well as in food shows considerable influence of the Austro Hungarian Empire.
