City of Novi Sad occurs in the second half of the 17th century on a rocky reef of Fruska Gora, on the right bank of the Danube, when began the construction of the Petrovaradin fortress.
The Petrovaradin fortress was the largest military fortress in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.

Later fortress grew into today’s Novi Sad with 300.000 inhabitants. Novi Sad is located in the province of Vojvodina, Republic of Serbia. Novi Sad is a “city of culture” also called the Serbian Athens, this name thanks to its numerous cultural events.

The development of winemaking begins on the hills above Fruska gora for 1700 years BC, when the first vines planted by the Roman Emperor Probus of the ancient Sirmium.
For centuries the capital place of wine in Serbia is Karlovci, suburb of Novi Sad. Authentic wine of this region is Bermet, which traders 150 years ago exported to the US, according to some data Bermet was on the wine list of “Titanic.”

European Capital of Culture 2021 – Novi Sad
Yesterday in Brussels declared the European Capital of Culture for 2021! After the final presentation of the project “Novi Sad 2021”, which was held yesterday in Brussels by Novi Sad delegation. A panel of independent experts made a historic decision that the first city outside the EU (European Union) became European capital of culture.
European Capital of Culture was established in order to highlight the richness and diversity of European cultures, strengthen cultural ties among Europeans, connect people from different European countries, meet other cultures, promote mutual understanding and strengthen the sense of Europeanness.
Title of European Capital of Culture is not awarded for one year. It takes thirty years.
